NBG Child Development Center to Reopen Following Thorough Facility Disinfection

SANTA RITA, Guam (Sept. 1, 2020) - Effective Wednesday, Sept. 2, the U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG) Child Development Center (CDC) on main base will reopen, following an inspection by Public Health Activity Guam.

The NBG CDC was thoroughly deep cleaned, de-fogged with disinfectant, and sanitized under guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) over the course of five days.

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, NBG was notified that an employee at the CDC tested positive for COVID-19. All close contacts of the confirmed case were notified directly and are under quarantine or isolation for 14 days. A close contact is an individual who has come in face-to-face contact with a confirmed COVID-positive individual for at least 10 minutes or more and within six feet, or who has had direct contact with infectious secretions of the confirmed COVID-positive individual (e.g. being coughed on). The employee must be re-tested with negative results to return to the facility.

“We have ensured the facility is safe and in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and CNIC,” said Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Guam Acting Director Donna Spaddy. “Our children and our staff are our number one priority, and we will continue doing everything we can to ensure they are safe.”

For several months, the CDC has implemented social distancing measures, intensified cleaning and disinfection efforts, implemented screening procedures upon arrival, and modified drop-off and pick-up procedures.

According to Spaddy, families affected by the CDC’s closure will be pro-rated for the dates the center was closed.

“I am fully confident in the actions taken by the NBG CDC to reopen the facility and to continue providing services to mission essential personnel,” said NBG Acting Commanding Officer Capt. Hans Sholley. “We appreciate the community’s support and patience as we take measures to avoid any possible exposure of the virus at NBG facilities. We ask everyone to continue doing their part to protect themselves, their families, and colleagues.”
